What a Weekend

Wow. What a wonderful weekend we had. After enduring a massive traffic jam on 77North because of construction. I finally pulled into West Jefferson at almost 8:00. We enjoyed a calzone from Brick Stone for supper. Saturday morning, we had breakfast, then left the house, eventually planning to get to Mount Mitchell. First of all we tried to fine a log cabin that Tim told Jerry was for sale, but the directions were not clear enough. We'll try to get more detailed info from Tim. Then we hit the Lansing VFD where they were selling barbecue chicken plates, and decided to wait and have a picnic lunch at Mount Mitchell. So off, towards Boone, through Spruce Pine, where we hit the BRP. We just had to go through Crabtree to see if it was raining, which it had been. We believe that it rains every day @ Crabtree. LOL! Anyway, so we journey South on BRP until we get to Mount Mitchell. It's noticably cooler. We stopped at the visitors center and got some info on the park. The campground was closed because of all the bear activity. Wo we went on up to the summit to enjoy our barbecued chicken picnic. It was delicious! We decided that a cup of coffee from the restaurant we be an awesome complement to the cake that was included with the plate, so down the mountain we went. We picked up a couple of hikers that had just walked 5½ miles from the Black Mountain Campground, so we tooked them up to the summit. (they were pretty tired). So we went back down to the restaurant again, and got our coffee, along with some souvenirs from the gift shop.
We decided to try to find Black Mountain Campground, but the road was closed. So we decided to take a different route back to WJ via Hwy. 80. And what do you think we saw down Highway 80. The Black Mountain Campground. It was awesome and we definitely intend to camp there soon. Not much further down the road was Carolina Hemlock campground, which was comparable to Black Mountain, but a little smaller, but it was beautiful. Put that one on the list as well. We got back to WJ around 8:00 pm. What a beautiful and tiring day we had, but we both had a great time.
Sunday morning we visited a neat little church called Orion Baptist Church in Jefferson. God was there and the service was very uplifting.
I returned home Sunday night about 8:00 pm and enjoyed the comfort of my recliner. Wow, that was a fun weekend! I highly recommend the trip.
